PRESERVATION THROUGH PRINT

Preserving Indigenous Cultures and Histories through Affordable Self-Publishing Projects

Books should not only be a teaching tool, but also a means to preserve and protect the history of Indigenous cultures for future generations. I believe that children and adult benefit from learning about the culture and traditions of our country’s First Americans. Historical books presented from a tribal perspective offer children an opportunity to gain experience about their long-honored past, and about the culture of their tribal affiliation, as well as teaching a language unique to their tribe.

This is why we are inviting indigenous leaders and educators to the Preservation through Print workshop at the gorgeous Ute Indian  Museum in Montrose, Colorado. Built in 1956, the  Ute  Indian Museum is located in the heart of traditional Ute territories.  The museum and grounds are listed in the National Register  of Historical Places and features Chief Ouray Memorial Park, Chipeta’s tomb, and a native plants garden, in addition to the spectacular  exhibits inside the museum.

Here you will learn firsthand how  you can create and publish a whole  curriculum around your tribal customs, traditions and language.

BENEFITS OF SELF-PUBLISHING

♦ The tribe maintains ownership of all written materials and illustrations.

♦ You control the content of the material and how it is presented.

♦ Books can be customized to meet the goals of tribal educators and leaders.

♦ You can utilize the skills and wisdom of tribal elders and historians, and educators to develop curriculum that identifies with the culture and traditions of the tribe.

♦ Self-publishing is easier because of digital presses and print on demand. Learn how to create digital materials, as well.

♦ If you sell the book to local history museums and local schools, you retain all the profits for other projects.

♦ Indigenous writers and artists can set up school visits and public speaking events, to help share the history of the tribe, written from the tribal perspective.

♦ Most importantly, your tribe will have  preserved your history through print and will lead the way to other timely and important cultural projects for future generations.

BELIEVE IN THE VISION!

Here’s a few reasons why you should produce your own history books and  educational materials.

♦ Believe in the beauty of your culture and traditions and the gifts it has to  offer everyone!

♦ Believe that Indigenous languages, customs and traditions, and teachings from centuries ago, can be preserved for future generations.

♦ Believe in the fact that your self-published curriculum helps Indigenous children connect with their past, and helps them embrace their identity and tribal connection, and learn about their traditional tribal language. Teach children about leadership through stories about tribal leaders and their impact on their tribes.

♦ Help children move into the future where they become leaders for generations to come. More importantly, children can carry this knowledge forward to future generations.
