In this memoir author and artist Vickie Leigh Krudwig shares her personal journey to write about Chipeta, a Ute woman who visited her in a dream early in the morning on April 22, 2000. During her long journey, she would undergo a complete and soulful transformation as she walked an unfamiliar path to uncover Chipeta’s history and that of the Ute people. Follow Vickie as she comes face-to-face with her past, present, and future, as she undergoes a radical change in the way she experienced life. From fearful and anxiety-ridden to a confident and purposeful woman and fine artist, Vickie shows that healing is possible when we keep an open mind and heart to unexpected blessings.

This humble personal and deeply moving story is such a pleasure to read. The author has a gift of being able to describe and interweave both the experiences of her five senses and the feeling and thoughts in her mind as she recounts her memories of this life-changing decision and journey she takes. Anyone interested in spirituality, self-actualization, women’s empowerment, Native Americans, and the Rocky Mountain region should read her story. “It is my honor to share my connection with Vickie Leigh Krudwig. I have been the Director at the Ute Indian Museum for 26 years and have worked professionally with Vickie for the past 17 years. During that time, we also developed a friendship. I endorse Vickie as a unique artist in her field of painting, storytelling, poetry, and publishing Native educational books. Her connecting with many tribes has been valuable in her assisting to develop education literature ranging from historical books to teacher guides. Her materials and drawings are also in the Nuu-ciu Strong, a Colorado fourth grade resource guide that are lessons about the Ute people of Colorado. Before the Nuu-ciu Strong teaching guide, we used her materials at the Ute Indian Museum.

Vickie’s art connects to the way we as Native People share our oral traditional stories. Through her dreams and experience, she creates a spiritual process through various styles of art. It is from her art she believes her paintings are a prayer and have their own “spiritual energy”.

I respect Vickie as a highly professional artist and her inspiration and relationships she has with the natural and spiritual world as she creates the past, present, and future through her art.”
